About the opportunity
Join an established software company building the backend systems behind an enterprise data platform used across asset-intensive industries like energy, utilities, mining, and manufacturing. This is a systems engineering role at heart, memory management, concurrency, and performance at genuine production scale, in a business with an international footprint and a long track record in enterprise software.
The role
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance backend systems in Rust and Java
- Build scalable, reliable asynchronous systems using modern concurrency patterns
- Optimise throughput, latency, memory usage, and I/O for large-scale processing workloads
- Develop robust APIs and reusable internal libraries and components
- Contribute to architecture discussions and technical decision-making, working across distributed global teams
What you'll bring
- 5+ years of software engineering experience in Java, plus 2+ years of hands-on production Rust
- Strong async Rust experience (Tokio or similar)
- Deep understanding of Rust memory ownership, borrowing, lifetimes, and buffer management
- Experience shipping production-grade distributed or high-performance backend systems
- Ability to work independently through technically ambiguous problems
Desirable: gRPC in Rust, high-throughput streaming architectures, cloud data lake experience (AWS/Azure/GCP), and exposure to data governance or rules-engine platforms.
What's on offer
- $165,000 to $180,000 plus super
- Flexible hybrid working model
- Ongoing learning and career development
- Generous paid time off
