Our client is a major NSW Government agency seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join a high-impact Technology and Communications function on an initial 12-month contract engagement.
This is a genuinely hands-on senior role for someone who thinks statistically first and reaches for tools second. You will work across complex datasets to design experiments, build and deploy classical ML models and apply optimisation techniques that drive real operational outcomes.
What you'll be doing:
- Designing and developing classical ML models, statistical analyses and optimisation solutions
- Applying operations research techniques to complex resource allocation problems
- Working across large, complex and sensitive government datasets
- Conducting experimental design and rigorous statistical analysis to derive meaningful insights
- Communicating findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Contributing to data governance and best practice within a multidisciplinary team
- Working independently when given a task while collaborating with the broader team as needed
- Strong statistical foundations, experimental design, hypothesis testing, inferential statistics and the ability to infer meaning from data rather than just apply models
- Proven classical ML experience across ensemble methods, time series, Bayesian methods or optimisation modelling
- Demonstrated ability to lead your own research or projects from brief through to delivery
- Strong experience with Python.
- Experience working with large, complex datasets in a regulated or enterprise environment
- Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or NZ Citizen with a current NZ Passport (mandatory)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a NSW Police Force security clearance
- Optimisation modelling experience -- operations research, combinatorial optimisation or resource allocation
- Government, law enforcement or highly regulated industry background
- Academic or research background with published work
- R proficiency alongside Python
