About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Infrastructure Engineer
to manage, administer, and optimise our VMware virtualisation infrastructure across multiple sensitive networks, including the Australian Secret Network (ASN), Customs Secret Network (CSN), and ABF vessel environments. This role is critical in ensuring the stability, efficiency, and security of our virtual environments, which support our digital platform services. Key Responsibilities:
As an Infrastructure Engineer, your core responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- VMware Environment Management:
- Administer and support the VMware server and desktop (Horizon) environments across ASN, CSN, and ABF vessel networks.
- Regularly upgrade, patch, and manage VMware environments to maintain optimal performance and security.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for customer and internal issues related to VMware products.
- ICT Hardware and Software Configuration:
- Install and configure ICT hardware, utilising VMware tools to enable features that facilitate better management and seamless user interaction.
- Implement features within VMware products for both server and desktop virtualisation as required for BAU operations and business projects.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, including system designs, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and risk management plans (RMPs).
- Produce high-level and detailed designs, security impact assessments (SIA), and post-incident reports (PIR).
- Automation and Best Practices:
- Develop and implement automated management solutions to improve platform management and administration processes, enhancing system availability, efficiency, and security.
- Continuously review and improve the VMware infrastructure design, aligning with best practices and departmental standards.
- Training and Knowledge Transfer:
- Mentor and transfer VMware-related knowledge to other team members to build cross-skilling within the workforce.
- Guide the latest VMware developments and assist with ongoing staff education within the department.
- Project and BAU Engagement:
- Balance multiple priorities across business-as-usual (BAU) activities and key project milestones.
- Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to ensure the timely delivery of infrastructure projects.
- Security and Compliance:
- Respond to sensitive notices, ensuring timely patching of VMware products and compliance with security requirements.
- Extensive VMware Knowledge:
Proven experience working with the full VMware product suite, including server and desktop virtualisations (Horizon). This includes conducting infrastructure reviews, creating improvement plans, and implementing complex changes to improve system resilience and availability. - VMware Certification:
VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent certification is required. - Technical Documentation:
Strong ability to develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, such as technical specifications, system designs, and standard operating procedures. - Problem-Solving Skills:
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues promptly, ensuring minimal downtime and maintaining service continuity. - Project Management:
Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines, balancing both operational and project-related activities. - Collaboration & Communication:
Excellent communication skills to work with internal stakeholders, project teams, and external contractors.
- Experience with VMware vSphere, vCenter, ESXi, and related VMware products.
- Knowledge of security protocols and compliance standards in sensitive network environments.
- Familiarity with automation tools for VMware environments.
- You will be required to manage a variety of tasks, from supporting day-to-day operations to implementing major infrastructure improvements.
- The role will involve collaboration with other teams, as well as mentoring and knowledge transfer to internal staff and contractors.
